SERVICE PROJECT

In 2012, OASFAA is again partnering with Seashore Family Literacy, a non-profit organization based in Waldport with a mission to promote education, community, health — and life literacy — through numerous programs, including youth and adult tutoring, parenting classes, after-school activities, summer camps, a clothing bank, free meals and more. Participation levels in 2011 were wonderful and the words of Seashore founder, Senitila McKinley inspired many to do more.

Over 50 percent of Waldport area youth are economically disadvantaged, and within the school district there are over 400 homeless students (defined as living with relatives or friends, awaiting foster care, or living in an emergency shelter, motel, campground, car or park).

While Seashore’s primary focus is on change through education, Seashore Family Literacy has found it critical to first meet the most basic needs of food and clothing. To that end, Seashore provides free Saturday Breakfasts, Family Dinners, a Summer Food Program, after-school snacks, and free clothing for all ages. These programs serve hundreds of individuals each week. Once basic needs are met, Seashore hosts and supports a variety of free, education-based, community-focused programs.

Seashore Family Literacy is excited to have OASFAA partnering with them this year.  Please consider bringing some of the following items to the conference to be donated to the organization.  They have ongoing needs for:

  • Children’s shoes (any size)
  • Hats, gloves, scarves
  • Hooded sweatshirts
  • Soap, shampoo, and other hygiene products
  • Snacks for the after school program
  • School supplies

Watch for additional announcements via the OASFAA list-serve as the conference approaches and visit the Seashore Family Literacy website at www.seashorefamily.org.

HANDS-ON SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

For those conference attendees who are interested in rolling up their sleeves and giving of their time to support Seashore Family Literacy, OASFAA has a new way for us to be involved in an active role upon the conclusion of the conference.  As this is an after-conference event, we understand that there may only be a few conference participants who wish or are able to participate, but the conference committee wanted to try something new to break out of that Groundhog Day routine.  At this point, we will be helping paint the boys and girls bathrooms at Seashore’s home base in Waldport (about 30 miles south of Salishan).  Depending on commitment level during registration, we may help with other projects as well.  If you are interested and available to help with this project (tentatively scheduled from about noon to 4), please indicate as such on your registration.
